Cooling Bamboo Mattress Topper — 10cm Deep, 1000 GSM

Most toppers ask you to choose. Soft, or cool. Add cushioning and you add heat; choose something breathable and you end up with a thin pad that barely changes the bed at all.

This one is ten centimetres deep with a 100% bamboo viscose sleep surface. Bamboo viscose is porous and moisture-wicking — it draws perspiration away from the skin and lets air move through the fabric, rather than holding warmth against you the way microfibre does. Underneath sits 1000 GSM of fill, roughly the weight of a thick winter duvet, box-quilted into channels so it stays spread across the bed instead of drifting to the edges.

Elastic corner straps hold it to the mattress. Slipping is the most common complaint people have about toppers — waking to find the thing bunched at the foot of the bed — so it was the first problem we designed out.

The bamboo is the surface you sleep on, not the fill beneath it. We'd rather say that plainly than let the word do more work than it should.

One thing worth knowing before you order: adding 10cm to your mattress means your current fitted sheets may no longer reach the corners. If your sheets are already a snug fit, have a deep-pocket set ready.

The first fortnight

• Give it a few hours out of the packaging to loft up fully before you make the bed.
• It will settle a little under body weight in the first two weeks and then hold steady. The quilted channels exist to stop that settling turning into lumps and hollows.
• Fluff it by hand when you change the sheets and it keeps its depth for far longer.

Washing it

• Machine washable at [INSERT WASH TEMPERATURE]°C on a gentle cycle — no dry cleaning.
• Single and small double fit most home machines. Double and larger need a 9kg drum or a trip to the launderette; forcing a large topper into a small machine is what causes fill to clump.
• Tumble dry on low with a couple of dryer balls or clean tennis balls. This is the step that keeps the fill even as it dries.
• Make sure it is dry all the way through before it goes back on the bed.

When a topper isn't the answer

A topper smooths and softens a sleep surface. It doesn't rebuild support underneath. If your mattress has a deep sag, a broken spring, or a dip that pulls you toward the middle, ten centimetres of fill will make it more comfortable but won't correct it — you're better off replacing the mattress. If the bed is structurally sound and simply too firm, too flat, or too hot, this is exactly the job it was made for.
